TNJFU
About College

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University was established in 2012 to improve the fisheries sector of Tamil Nadu State. Institute of Fisheries Technology, Nagapattinam was established by Government of Tamil Nadu with a budget provision of Rs.34.08 crore. Subsequently the Institute of Fisheries Technology has been renamed as College of Fisheries Engineering considering the growing importance and emerging needs of engineering solutions in fisheries sector.

College of Fisheries Engineering is a constituent college of TNJFU and it is located at the coastal town of Nagapattinam along the Bay of Bengal. The college is first of its kind in the Country established in 2015 with a sole aim of developing engineering personnel for the fisheries industries. College is offering two Under Graduate (UG) professional degree and two Post Graduate (PG) professional degree programs

1. B.Tech. (Fisheries Engineering) – Supported by Tamil Nadu Government

2. B.Tech. (Energy and Environmental Engineering) – Self supporting mode

3. M.Tech. (Fish Process Engineering)

4. M.Tech. (Aquacultural Engineering)

B.Tech. (Fisheries Engineering) is a 4 year degree programme. This degree empowers the graduates to be an able engineer in the areas like aquaculture engineering, fish processing engineering, fisheries nautical & marine engineering, basic engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics) that could support and compliment the fisheries industries.

About the curriculum, the course includes study of fish species and aquatic ecosystem, designing of ponds and construction, farm layout, designing of fish processing machineries and application in value addition of products, designing freezing equipment, refrigerating storage devices and structures, designing of fish crafts and gears, computer science application in fisheries sector and usage of electrical equipment in onboard fishing.

The scope for fisheries engineers is vast in all the sectors of fisheries and the first batch of students graduated during 2019. Students have been placed in leading fisheries industries and fisheries department. The scope can further expand as the fisheries industries all over the world expands.

Climate impacts and rising energy prices mean that the energy and environment issues are becoming increasingly important. There is a great need to use energy in more effective, economically viable manner so as to safeguard the environment. To address the energy and environmental related issue in fisheries sector, B. Tech. (Energy and Environmental Engineering) is offered at College of Fisheries Engineering under Faculty of Fisheries Engineering. It is relatively a new discipline, which involves combining methods of science and engineering to meet the demands of energy in Fish Processing and Aquaculture sector as well as to improve the quality of aquatic and related environment. It is a self-supporting degree program. This degree program is offered since 2019 with a sole aim of producing Engineers with Fisheries, Energy and Environmental knowledge.

In order to provide higher study opportunities for fisheries engineering graduates and to strengthen the research in the field of Fisheries Engineering, M.Tech (Fisheries Engineering) in the specialization of Aquacultural Engineering and Fish Process Engineering are also offered at College of Fisheries Engineering since 2019 with an intake of four students in each discipline.

College of Fisheries Engineering is recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi since 2019 and it is also certified by ISO 9001:2015.
