The 4th Meeting of Research Council of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University was conducted at the Conference Hall of ARTP, TNJFU Madhavaram Campus, Chennai on 02.08.2018 under the Chairmanship of Prof. S. Felix, Vice-Chancellor, TNJFU. The University Officers, nominated Heads of Research Centers & Heads of the Departments, and the following nominated Experts, Progressive Entrepreneurs, Officials from funding agencies, and Principal Investigators of the identified projects were present in the meeting.

Prof. G. Jeyasekaran, Director of Research and Member Secretary, Research
Council welcomed the gathering and thanked the Vice-Chancellor for his valuable
guidance. The Director briefly explained the role of the Research Council and requested the experts and the other invitees to actively participate and provide suggestions to strengthen the research activities of the University.
Prof. S. Felix, Vice-Chancellor and Chairman, Research Council, inaugurated the
Research Council Meeting by stressing the importance of research council in orienting
the staff towards research. The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the activities of the
University with different constituent units in the State of Tamil Nadu with particular
reference to ranking of the University.
Different research based Awards were given to the faculty members, research
students for various research achievements in the research council meeting. This is the
first time, such awards were conferred on the faculty and students. They are given as
mentioned below:

Recommendations
- Project proposal on Terrace farming of fish (on the model of aquaponics) shall be
prepared by the faculty members of Aquaculture, and sent to State Planning
Commission for funding under TANII.
- The faculty members of College of Fisheries Engineering shall collaborate with
NIOT, Chennai for designing cages suitable for the State of Tamil Nadu, and for
development of auto feeders.
- Project proposals on „Aqua One Centre‟ shall be prepared by all Colleges/
Centres/ Directorates of our University and sent to NFDB for funding.
- Online courses need to be offered by all the Colleges/ Directorates.
- The faculty members working on collagen shall collaborate with the faculty of
Pondicherry University on characterizing the collagen and other smaller
molecular components.
- Project proposals shall be prepared on finding alternative protein sources such
as ground nut meal, silk worm meal, etc. in fish/ shrimp feed, and submitted to
funding by industries such as Kemin Industries through industrial collaboration.
- The faculty members with Ph.D. degree shall necessarily operate the externally
funded research projects. It should be made mandatory for promotions of
teaching faculty.
- The faculty members shall be given incentives, awards and appreciation
certificates for bringing research projects, highly rated research publications, and
commercialization of the technologies, and patents.
The Vice-Chancellor made the following points for implementation for improving
the research activities of the University.
- Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors should be assessed
for promotions based on the R & D Projects they obtained (Asst. Prof. =1 No.;
Assoc. Prof. = 2 Nos.; Prof. = 3 Nos.).
- University Officers also need to have R & D Projects and must guide Ph.D. and
PG students as they are the senior faculty members capable of bringing projects
to the University.
- Suitable Amendments have to be made in the ASSR accordingly to include the
above suggestions.
The Director of Research, Prof. G. Jeyasekaran proposed the vote of thanks to
the experts, scientists, farmers & processors specialists, university officers, principal
investigators and other faculty members at the end of the fourth meeting of Research
Council of the University.
