Dr. MGR FC & RI, Ponneri celebrated National Fish Farmers Day

To commemorate the National Fish Farmers Day (10 th July), Dr. M.G.R Fisheries College
and Research Institute, Ponneri and State Department of Fisheries, Ponneri, Tiruvallur District jointly
organised an awareness programme on “Recent issues and challenges in Aquaculture”. The
programme began at 11 am in the institute’s seminar hall. Dr. B. Ahilan, Dean i/c, Dr. M.G.R. FC &
RI, Ponneri inaugurated the awareness programme by explaining the background as well as
importance of Fish Farmers Day. The inauguration was followed by technical session in which three
important topics were presented by senior faculty of the institute. Dr. Cheryl Antony, Professor &
Head, Dept. of Aquaculture spoke about the status and scope of recent aquaculture technologies in
doubling farmers income. Dr. D. Manikandavelu, Professor & Head, Dept. of Aquatic Environment
Management presented the recent challenges in Water quality management in Aquaculture. Dr. A.
Uma, Professor & Head, Dept. of Aquatic Animal Health Management spoke on Importance of seed
selection in Aquaculture. Mr. G. Velan, Assistant Director of Fisheries, Tiruvallur District briefed on
Biosecurity in Aquaculture as well as schemes operated by Tamil Nadu State Fisheries Department
for the benefit of Fish/Shrimp farmers of Tiruvallur District. Around 70 fish/shrimp farmers of
Tiruvallur District participated in the programme. Dept. of Fisheries Extension, Economics and
Statistics organized the event. Dr. C. Lloyd Chrispin, Asst. Professor, DFEES and Mr. G. Ajay Anand,
Sub- Inspector of Fisheries coordinated the arrangements for the event.
