The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi conducted an online one-day freshwater ornamental fish culture training Programme on 13.08.2020. This online training was organized by the Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics, FC&RI, Thoothukudi to raise awareness about the freshwater ornamental fish farming for beginners as an alternative livelihood and business opportunities during this COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 18 participants, including fish farmers, fishery entrepreneurs, rural fisherwomen and aqua industries personnel from various districts such as Salem, Erode, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Thoothukudi, Ramnad and Madurai attended the online training through Google Meet. Dr. B.Sundaramoorthi, Dean, FC&RI, Thoothukudi inaugurated the training, emphasizing the availability of resources for ornamental fish farming and their future growth in production and demand. Dr. N.V.Sujathkumar, Professor and Head of this Department stressed the importance of freshwater ornamental fish farming.
The event's programme included three technical lectures. Dr. R.Santhakumar, Professor, delivered a lecture on ornamental fish culture techniques and their market demand for beginners. Dr. Cheryl Antony, Professor and Head, Dept. of Aquaculture gave a lecture on freshwater ornamental fish breeding techniques and Dr V. Rani, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Aquatic Environment Management presented a topic on water quality management in fish farming system and live feed production for ornamental fish. Feedback from the trainees’ was obtained at the end of the programme. Dr. R.Santhakumar, Professor, Dept. of Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics coordinated the programme.
