"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"

Fisheries Biotechnology Centre was established as a unit in the Department of Aquaculture as a Part II Scheme during 1997-98 at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi. M.F.Sc., degree programme in Fisheries Biotechnology was however started early in the year 1992 itself and so far this centre has produced 29 post graduates in Fisheries Biotechnology.

The Part II Scheme on “Establishment of Fisheries Biotechnology Centre” was upgraded in to a full-fledged Department of Fisheries Biotechnology in the year 2012. From the academic year (2017-18) M.F.Sc., (Fish Biotechnology) programme offered at Thoothukudi has been shifted to the newly created Institute of Fisheries Post Graduate Studies (IFPGS), TNFU-OMR Campus, Vaniyanchavadi, Chennai.

Institute of Fisheries Postgraduate Studies (IFPGS) is a constituent college of TNJFU and it is located at Old Mahabhalipuram Road, Near Vaniyanchavadi, Padur (P.O), Chennai- 603 103. The following programmes will be offered in this Institute from this academic year.

  • 4. M.B.A., Fisheries Enterprise Management


  • To offer M.F.Sc., programmes in Fish Biotechnology, Fish Genetics and Breeding, Fish Pharmacology and Toxicology, Fish Nutrition and Feed Technology.
  • To offer M.Sc., in Marine Biotechnology sponsored by DBT, GOI, New Delhi
  • To offer M.B.A., in Fisheries Enterprise Management
  • To offer Ph.D., in Fish Biotechnology and Ph.D., in Life Sciences
  • To offer M.Sc., in (Biotechnology)
  • To undertake applied research in fish breeding of native riverine fishes of Tamil Nadu, effect of drugs used in aquaculture practises, DNA bar coding of fishes etc.
  • To undertake applied research in fish nutrition and feed technology
  • To analysis feed ingredients and fish feed
  • To nurture the business management and entrepreneurship skills with the specialised approach to Fisheries and Aquaculture Business Enterprises
