Kanyakumari Ganapathipuram Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (KKG CeSA)

An exclusive Centre for focusing research in shrimp brood bank has been established in the west coast of Tamil Nadu near Kolachal in Kanyakumari Dt. The Centre has been established along the coastline in 8 acres of land. This site is located between Ganapathipuram and Azhikal coastal villages and boarded with Arabian Sea. The Centre presently has two quarantine buildings, primary and secondary quarantine building coupled with Nucleus Breeding Centre in a modest way.

There are some more facilities like, multiplication centre for the production of SPF Brood stock and Families segregation and maintenance facilities are to come up in the Centre. This centre is presently focussing at development of SPF Broodstock for the Indian Penaeid species with special attention on Black Tiger Shrimp. In addition to supplying brood stock, this centre will impart training to develop technical manpower among the local fisherfolk community to augment alternate livelihoods and also offer technical services to the needy farmers in advanced broodstock management

Objectives of the Centre

The Centre has the following objectives to contemplate:

  • To establish a shrimp brood bank in Kanyakumari Dt
  • To produce selectively bred Penaeus shrimp brood stock (mother shrimps)
  • To set up multiplication centre for high quality shrimps for producing seeds which should exhibit fast growth and high survival in commercial shrimp farms
