Dr. M.G.R Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI), Ponneri, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Dr. J Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) organized its annual national conference “PONSHRIMP” in the theme of Aquatic Animal Health Management on 04.10.2019. In the inaugural ceremony, Dr. B. Ahilan, Dean, Dr.MGR FC&RI, Ponneri and Convener of PONSHRIMP’19 welcomed the gathering. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. S. Felix, Vice-Chancellor, TNJFU by lighting the traditional lamp in the presence of the guest of honour, Mr. V. Balasubramanian, General Secretary, Prawn Farmers Federation of India and other delegates. Technical session began with the presentation by the guest of honour’s lecture on ‘disease and health management in shrimp farming’. Dr. A.S. Sahul Hammed, Professor & OIE expert, C. Abdul Hakeem College, Vellore delivered a lecture on ‘recent trends in diagnosis of diseases in aquaculture’. Dr. Balasubramanian, Vice President, CP Aquaculture (India) Pvt. Ltd, Chennai spoke about how White Feces Syndrome is a threat to Pacific White Shrimp farming in India. Mr. A. Kumaresan, DGM & Head (Marketing), M/s Shenlong Biotech India Pvt. Ltd gave a presentation on ‘feed management strategies as an alternative to avoid diseases in aquaculture’. Dr. M. Udayashiva, Technical Manager, M/s Neospark drugs and Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. delivered his talk on the topic of ‘impacts of water and soil quality management on diseases in aquaculture’. Dr. Edward G.J. George, Regional Technical Manager, M/s Kemin Aquascience, India spoke about    novel health management strategies in aquaculture. Dr. A. Uma, Professor, TNJFU delivered a lecture on fish and shrimp seed quality assessment and its selection for profitable aquaculture. In total, the technical sessions of the event had eight presentations which include six talks of industry experts revolving around the various aspects of aquatic animal health management such as its current status and future prospects in local and global scenario in aquaculture. The technical session was followed by panel discussion in which the participants mainly farmers clarified their doubts in aquatic animal health management with the experts who delivered lecture in the event. The event concluded with the proposal of vote of thanks by Dr. A. Uma, Co-Convener of the event. Nearly 100 members including farmers representing different regions of the Country along with the faculty and students of the host University participated in the event.
