Dr.M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute has been established at Thalainayeru, Nagapattinam District with the financial outlay of Rs.6816.78 lakhs for 5 years. Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced under Rule 110 of Legislative Assembly, a new FC&RI under Tamil Nadu Dr.J.Jayalalithaa Fisheries University by considering the need for technical manpower for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Tamil Nadu. The new College has started functioning at TNJFU campus, Nagapattinam with 20 B.F.Sc students for the academic year 2017-18.
According to the G.O(Ms.)No.184 dt.21.09.2017 of the Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (FS4) Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, Rs.1644.93 lakh has been allotted for the first-year establishment of this college with 54 teaching and non-teaching posts (20 regular & 34 contractuals) under different cadres. The proposed college will have seven departments viz., Aquaculture, Aquatic Environment Management, Fisheries Biology and Resource Management, Fisheries Economics, Extension and Statistics, Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering, Fish Pathology and Health Management and Fish Processing Technology.
In addition to the college campus proposed to be established at Thalainayeru, off campus research farm facilities will also be established with 40 acres of land for both fresh water and brackish water aquaculture. Demonstration and training facilities will be established in the proposed farm complex.
