World Taxonomist Appreciation Day 2021 was celebrated at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi

The Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi organized World Taxonomist Appreciation Day on 19.03.2021. It is essential to have an understanding on the endangered and vulnerable fish species and to take necessary steps to conserve and protect them. Moreover, the scientists working on the field of fish taxonomy and conservation are dropping day-by-day. Hence, it is necessary to encourage the taxonomists to conduct more research on this field. Based on this, World Taxonomist Appreciation Day was organized. In this programme, about 136 participants including scientists, faculties, research scholars and students attended the programme. Dr. S. David Kingston, Professor and Head, Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management welcomed the gathering. Dr. B. Sundaramoorthi, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi addressed the gathering. He explained the importance of Taxonomists and the necessity for their encouragement. Dr. K. Venkataramanujam, Former Dean of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, gave a special lecture on “Taxonomy, Origin, Growth and Advancement in Fisheries Science”. He explained about fish taxonomy, its importance and their anatomical features. He also explained about the morphology of fishes, types of fins, types of scales and their structures. Dr. V.K.
