The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University was established by the Act No. 21 of 2012. The Fisheries staff Training Institute (FSTI) of State Fisheries Department was included under the university as per the schedule part II of the Act. The FSTI was transferred to the TNFU as per G.O (MS) No.216 dated 25.11.2015 of the AHF&D (FS2) Department. The FSTI attached under TNFU was renamed as Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University Academy as per Letter No.692/TNJFU/Estt./Change of Name/2018 dated: 19.02.2018 of the Registrar, TNJFU, Nagapattinam.

The vision of TNJFUA is to cater to the fisheries training needs of the staff of State Fisheries Department, TNJFU Teaching staff & Administrative Staff of the University and other stake holders.
The TNJFUA provides regular in service training for 6 months to the State Fisheries Department staff. The major subject components of the training includes Fisheries Resources Management, Aquaculture, Fishing Technology and Fish Post Harvest Technology, Co-operative Law and Administration, Co-operative Accounts, Disaster Management, Fisheries Economics, Fisheries Marketing, Fisheries Extension, Planning and Administration, Right to Information Act, Human Resources Development.
The TNJFUA also provides regular in service training for one year duration to the State Fisheries Department staff who do not possess the basic BFSC degree. The major subject components of the training includes Marine Fisheries, Inland Fisheries, Fish Processing Technology, Fishing Craft and Gear Technology, Navigation and Seamanship, Marine Engines, Co-operative Law and Management, Co-operative Accounts, Planning and Administration.
The Academy also conducts refresher course and Orientation Training on various fisheries subjects to the State Fisheries Department staff. The Academy conducts Faculty Development training, Training on Personality Development and Human Resource Development and the training on Office procedures and Administration, Right to Information Act to the Administrative staff of TNJFU.
The TNJFUA provides 3 months distance education certificate courses on fisheries technologies such as Ornamental Fish Farming, Fresh water Fish Farming, Vannamei Shrimp Farming. The farmers and the public can register for the courses.
