"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"
As we all know, aquatic food products are rich in protein, low in fat, besides having several nutritional health components such as omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, iron, etc. Considering the various health benefits, many people in developed nations are diverting towards aquatic food as an alternative to other meat and meat products. Therefore, ensuring the quality and safety of aquatic food is an important concern for fish business operators and public health authorities. The need for quality assurance arose, specifically in view of increasing incidences of food borne illness associated with microbes and chemical toxicity concerned with chemical contaminants, pollutants, heavy metals, etc. International standard regulatory authorities are enforcing new guidelines and recommendations day-by-day to assure quality and safety of aquatic food products. The TNJFU Referral Laboratory for Fish Quality Monitoring and Certification is established with a major mandate of monitoring the quality and safety of aquatic food products produced and processed in Tamil Nadu for domestic consumption as well as for international trade; and issue quality certification.
